Living on the Central Coast of California, we spend much more time training on wheels than in running snow. The BLM maintained public lands at the former Fort Ord Military Base provide sufficient (although challenging!) dirt trails and roads to satisfy most of our training needs. Winters, we try to get to the Sierra Nevada to run on sleds in the snow as often as possible. The closest runnable snow trail is about 3.5 hours drive from home. Our snow season typically starts late December and can run through the end of April on a good year. Below are some of our favorite Team pictures. Click the thumbnail for a larger, hi res view!
Leaping Sled Dogs Batman! TJ shows a sled dog's typical enthusiasm for her job. She certainly dispells any myth about 'forcing' sled dogs to run! Dirt Training @ Ord Terry training the team on a cart at Fort Ord. Niki (the red dog) and the dune cart have both retired since this picture. A Day Off Even sled dogs enjoy a day off. In Sibertopia, the Sled Pets spend their time off lounging around the house and getting fur everywhere. Working the Open Field This photo was taken doing open field leader training at Boot Camp in 03. The backdrop is the beautiful scenery at CrystalWood Lodge, the Inn owned by our friends Liz and Peggy. Nothing Like the Real Thing! While cart training is fun, there is nothing like the joy of running a nicely groomed trail in the snow. This was taken at the end of a long run at Webber Lake outside Truckee. | |
